We are aware, that the cause of the recent issue was a blackout affecting almost all of the southern part of Frankfurt/Offenbach due to an accident on the high voltage network of Netzdienste Rhein Main. In our case, it caused an issue on a single power feed, supplying one phase of 20 racks, which was in transfer bypass mode for temporary maintenance reasons, leading to tripped rack fuses up on load transfer due to the starting current of some servers. The cause and potential mitigations will be further clarified once we have restored remaining services, thank you for your patience.

People on site are safe, Data center on the campus, SBG1, was partially burned down, A fire early Wednesday morning destroyed one of Strasbourg data centers and part of a second one.
Firefighters were on the scene, protecting another datacenter facility on the campus from catching fire, while a fourth one experienced no impact.

The fire destroyed SBG2 data center, and a part of SBG1, Right now

We will carry out maintenance work at our Interxion Frankfurt POP in order to restore the redundancy of our core equipment, which was previously removed due to debugging.

The maintenance is intended to not cause any outage or packetloss, as precaution we advertise up to 30 minutes of downtime. We strongly recommend ip-transit customers with direct connections to this equipment, to reroute their traffic over alternative paths. Customer servers at this location are expected to be unreachable for a maximum period of 15 minutes. Customers on other locations will be routed over alternative paths before we start the maintenance work.

We will carry out maintenance work at our Interwerk (xF2s) to upgrade the firmware of our core equipment and restore redundancy, which was previously removed due to the debugging work in relation to xF3s.

If the maintenance is carried out in a regular way, there will be no downtime for customers connected to this equipment. However, as precaution, we announce a downtime of up to 45 minutes if our expectations are not met. As this is our core equipment at xF2s, this maintenance affects all customers at xF2s. We've identified a hardware issue with one of our storage nodes. This causes a downtime to a few cloud instances, we are working to get the storage back in operation.

//Update: The issue has been resolved. Unfortunately, the restore of the service took longer as expected, as we had to fix the filesystem and a broken kernel image. According to our analysis, a drive within the hardware raid failed and caused the raidcontroller to become stuck. Every time we've rebooted the box, the raidcontroller initialization took around 120 seconds, which slowed down the restore additionally. Within the next months, we will setup a fault tolerant GlusterFS storage over two new nodes and migrate all the data from this storage node to the new ones. We will inform affected customers upfront about the migration.

//23:06 A few minutes ago, a brief power failure occurred at our location FG01. Some internal services, as well as the virtual machines on the nodes vpscp20,21,22,23,24 were not reachable and had to be restarted.

//Update 23:20: All services are fully back. Statement follows.

//Update 23:30: According to the datacenter operator of FG01 (Interwerk), there was a partial power outage due to a overvoltage which caused to drop the load to the powergrid on one UPS feed. Regulary, a UPS is connected with three power lines (three phase supply). In this case, one of the phases was the problematic one which caused the UPS to drop the load on the rectiefier due to a security functionality, in order to protect the UPS itself. This has caused a short power loss on a few PDUs, which led to the outage of a small amount of servers at FG01. Most of our infrastructure was still up, also our network was running without any interruption. Most servers were back within minutes, some required manual intervention of our staff. We will do additional post-mortem tomorrow and evaluate various options, to avoid such a scenario in the future. If you still encounter undetected issues, please get in touch with our customer care.

The mentioned server experienced a outage due to a kernel panic while trying to write to it's disks. We did a hard reset for now and disabled a potential error cause, which restored service availability and will continue checking the system within our business hours. We may need to replace hardware parts due to a potential fault. This will be announced to affected customers in a seperate email.

-- UPDATE -- 16:45: It seems the outage was related to two faulty disks which were not recognized as faulty by the raidcontroller. We will change them against two new Seagate ES disks step by step. Hopefully there will be no other outage.

-- UPDATE -- 10:20: The first disk is rebuilding with a new replacement disk. We will wait until it's done, then we will proceed with the second slot.

-- UPDATE -- 12:52: The storage had encountered another crash. Raid rebuild is still in progress, we're rebooting the machine again.

OBHost US Services, Twitter, Spotify and Reddit, and a huge swath of other websites were down or screwed up this morning. This was happening as hackers unleashed a large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attackon the servers of Dyn, a major DNS host. It’s probably safe to assume that the two situations are related.

In order to understand how one DDoS attack could take out so many websites, you have to understand how Domain Name Servers (DNS) work. Basically, they act as the Internet’s phone book and facilitate your request to go to a certain webpage and make sure you are taken to the right place. If the DNS provider that handles requests for Twitter is down, well, good luck getting to Twitter. Some websites are coming back for some users, but it doesn’t look like the problem is fully resolved.

Dyn posted this update on its website:

Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.”

Update 4:22 PM EST: Looks like this is probably going to get even worse before it gets any better. Dyn says they are being hit with a third wave of attacks. Dyn told CNBC the attack is “well planned and executed, coming from tens of millions IP addresses at same time.”

Update 12:28 PM EST: Dyn says it is investigating yet another attack, causing the same massive outages experienced this morning. Based on emails from Gizmodo readers, this new wave of attacks seems to be affecting the West Coast of the United States and Europe. It’s so far unclear how the two attacks are related, but the outages are very similar.

Update 9:05 AM EST: Judging by emails from readers, this problem seems to be getting worse.

Update 9:43 AM EST: Dyn says the issue has been resolved.

Update 12:19 PM EST: Dyn says the issue is resolved, but multiple readers are messaging us to say they’re still having trouble accessing websites.

Earlier today our network in (Multan | TW) experienced a very large outbound DDoS.
 
The mitigation took 8 minutes to which during this time our network provision would have experienced intermittent packet loss.
 
We have fully null route the IP to save our other clients from Down-age. All services hosted in 122.129.82.97/28 will be down until we mitigated the outbound DDoS.
